Cut in PhD and post-doctoral FCT was brutal

Awarded 298 PhD and 233 post-doctoral scholarships by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The Association of Fellows Scientific Research (ABIC) has scored protest for January 21.

The year 2014 began with bad news for science, after learning, on Wednesday (16) , the overall results of applications for PhD and post-doctorate awarded by the FCT.
Of the 3416 candidates for PhD scholarships, only 298 received the scholarship. In the case of post-doctorates, scientists only 233 received scholarships between 2305 applications.

ABIC believes that the cuts are greater than 50 percent when it comes to PhD and post-doctoral and considers that the FCT had room to allocate more scholarships.

Annually, FCT, state foundation that manages an important part of the funding that goes to science, open competitions for individual PhD and post-doctoral. In the past decade, at the height of the funding for science in Portugal, arrived in 2031 to be awarded scholarships and 914 doctoral scholarships for post - doctorate in 2007 . Thanks to this investment , the number of doctorates in Portugal climbed to the European level . However , since 2010 the number of grants awarded has declined , following the economic crisis .

And the numbers published herein are overwhelming. In the case of post-doctorates, this year was that we had the highest number of nominations ever, the results show a decrease of 65% compared to 2012.

To meet application deadlines and application, many researchers have spent money on tuition and other expenses that can not continue to bear, remember this association .

For PhD scholarships, recognition is more complex. 2013 were awarded for the first time 431 new PhD scholarships Doctoral Programs FCT, according to information provided by the FCT. These doctoral programs are managed by universities and research centers in various areas, which have the responsibility of choosing the students who attribute the bags .

It was known that there would be a decrease in the number of individual doctoral scholarships . Still, the result shows a significant cut . The sum of the individual grants that were awarded with the PhD FCT equals about 729 bags. If we compare this value with the numbers 2012, where 1198 PhD scholarships were awarded, there is a decrease of almost 40%.

Portugal, a troika e o programa de ajustamento económico

Portugal, a Comissão Europeia, o Banco Central Europeu e o Fundo Monetário Internacional (troika) concordaram em implementar um programa de ajustamento económico.

A recapitalização do setor bancário português faz parte desse programa.

Any Constitutional leads must be replaced by measures that are likely to have more adverse effects on the portuguese economy.

Between 100 to 120 thousand Portuguese emigrated this year

Between 100 to 120 thousand Portuguese left the country this year, a very high emigration but remained stable due to lack of employment in other countries.

Although there are no official figures, the Portuguese Government admits that the number of Portuguese emigrants is similar to last year - about 100-120 thousand.

European countries, especially France, are still the main destinations of Portuguese, with Angola also attract similar numbers to last year, around 25 thousand.

No one is to check the output of Portuguese emigrants to Brazil, mainly due to lack of equivalence for certain professions, such as engineers and architects, who can not exercise that country.

About Mozambique, also the values remain the same for 2012, ie, three to four thousand Portuguese were living this year to the African country, where the volume of construction has not increased much.

Increasing exports is a positive indicator in increasing production and creating jobs in Portuguese soil.

The reduction of wages in Portugal and the troika

Troika insists on wage cuts in the private.

Portugal runs the risk of concluding a further adjustment program, the third in less than half a century, without changing some of the fundamental aspects of their economic architecture.

This tenth exam troika nothing seems to have happened. The government ceased to be an active agent of structural reforms and left the work incomplete. And unfortunately, we are only prepared to win with the euro when we allow wages fall as well as we allow wages to rise.

Although the social partners and even the government are against the idea, the 10th report of the troika review, recently published claims that there is more flexibility in the labor market.

International creditors argue, therefore, that the adjustment of the economy must be based on " increased flexibility in product and labor”, an expression that can lead to a new troika pressure to lower wage income in the private sector.

The purchasing power of the Portuguese was 29 % below the OECD average in 2011

The purchasing power of the Portuguese gives the gross domestic product (GDP) or value of all final goods and services produced in a given year.
Between 2008 and 2011 the Portuguese were poorer compared with the purchasing power of the average of OECD countries.
Gross capita expressed in Purchasing Power Parity (per capita GDP), per domestic product of Portugal in 2011 stood at 71% of the average of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development .
This indicates that in that year, the purchasing power of the Portuguese was 29% lower than the average of the 47 countries covered in this indicator released on Wednesday by the OECD, which uses a new methodology to calculate.
A new methodology for this indicator, which is published every three years incorporates new weights for the three thousand goods and services that make up the basket of prices that is integrated in GDP.
In 2008, this same indicator placed Portugal with a GDP per capita of 73 %, which means that the Portuguese viewed in this lapse of three years, the purchasing power recoil compared to an OECD average.
Still, the Portuguese suffered a less severe drop than that experienced in other peripheral countries of the euro. The purchasing power of the Greeks, which was 14% lower than the average in 2008, is now 26 % lower than in 2011. In Spain the reduction was also sharp, from 4% to 11% below average.
Luxembourg, partly because it is a financial center and the territory where many foreigners residing in neighboring countries work, has by far the highest GDP per capita , 146 % above the OECD average. It follows Norway (72%) and Switzerland (43%). Mexico and Turkey are the two countries with the lowest level of life of the OECD, with a power of less than half the average purchase.
The countries that most improved their relative position between 2008 and 2011 stand out Israel (from 26% to 16% below average), Mexico (56% to 52% below average) and Poland (48% to 40% below average) .
Among the larger countries highlights the change in the UK, which in 2008 had a purchasing power of 7% above average in 2011 and is 3% below average. Germany (from 14% to 8% above average) and France (1% up to 1% below average) also worsened.
It remains to wait for the next triennium.

People talking about poor people

One of the worst things that are happening in Portugal there is a bunch of people talking about poor people who are not poor and who, on behalf of the poor, want to defend your income.

Most pensioners are not poor and are pretending to be poor. And the real poor nobody talks or when he speaks, is to give rights to all other.
